If you are feeding a raw diet, the two questions you face every day are 'how much?' and 'in what ratio?'. Our raw diet calculator answers both - daily grams based on body weight percentage and a full BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) breakdown.

The 2-3% rule explained

Adult dogs typically eat 2 to 3 percent of their body weight daily on a raw diet. Active dogs sit closer to 3 percent; sedentary dogs closer to 2 percent. Puppies need much more - usually 5 to 10 percent of current body weight, split across three or four meals.

Start at 2.5 percent for an average adult, weigh weekly for the first month, and adjust by half a percent in either direction based on body condition.

The BARF ratio

The classic BARF ratio is 70% muscle meat, 10% raw meaty bones, 5% liver, 5% other secreting organ (like kidney) and 10% fruit and vegetables. This blend approximates what wild canids eat across a whole prey animal and provides a balance of protein, fat, calcium and micronutrients.

  • 70% muscle meat - beef, chicken, turkey, lamb.
  • 10% raw meaty bones - necks, wings, ribs.
  • 5% liver - beef, chicken or lamb.
  • 5% other organ - kidney, spleen, brain.
  • 10% vegetables and fruit - leafy greens, berries.

Safety tips for handling raw

Salmonella and campylobacter are real risks for both dogs and humans. Use a dedicated cutting board, wash hands and surfaces thoroughly, and store raw separately from human food. Never feed cooked bones - only raw, soft bones like chicken necks or wings.

Frequently asked questions

Is raw feeding safe for dogs?

When properly balanced and handled hygienically, most healthy adult dogs do well on raw. Immunocompromised people in the household and puppies need extra caution.

Do I need supplements with a BARF diet?

Often yes - many home raw diets benefit from omega-3 (fish oil), vitamin E and sometimes a trace mineral blend.

How many meals per day on raw?

Adults: one or two meals. Puppies: three to four meals.
