Body Condition Score (BCS) is the standardised way veterinarians describe whether a dog is underweight, ideal or overweight. The 9-point scale is more precise than the simpler 5-point version and is used in clinics worldwide.

Use the three sliders below to score your dog at home in under a minute.

What the scores mean

A BCS of 4 or 5 out of 9 is ideal. 1 to 3 indicates underweight, with 1 being severely emaciated. 6 to 7 indicates overweight. 8 and 9 indicate obesity, which carries the same health risks for dogs as it does for humans.

Every increase of one point on the 9-point scale corresponds to roughly 10 to 15 percent above ideal body weight.

How to assess at home

Stand your dog on a flat surface. Run flat hands gently along the ribcage - you should feel ribs easily, like the back of your own hand. Look down from above: there should be a clear narrowing behind the ribs. From the side, the belly should tuck upward toward the back legs.

  • Ribs: easy to feel under a thin fat layer.
  • Waist: clearly visible from above.
  • Belly: tucks up from chest to back legs.

What to do at each score

Score 1-3: increase calories by 10-20%, rule out parasites and dental issues. Score 4-5: maintain. Score 6-7: reduce calories by 10-15% and add a daily 10-minute walk. Score 8-9: speak to your vet about a structured weight-loss plan.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I check BCS?

Monthly is ideal - it catches drift before it becomes a problem.

Is a 9-point or 5-point scale better?

The 9-point scale is more sensitive and is the modern veterinary standard.

Can my dog be fluffy and still healthy weight?

Yes - coat can hide shape. Always combine a visual check with hands-on rib palpation.
